Dublin City University
Dublin City University was founded in 1981 and comprises over 16,000 students across five faculties including over 2600 postgraduate students, of whom c. 800 are research students. DCU is a young, dynamic and ambitious university with a distinctive mission to transform lives and societies through education, research and innovation. Excellence in DCU education and research activities has led to its ranking in the top of 1.5% of universities in the world. The University is consistently ranked among the top young universities globally, appearing in the QS Top 50 under 50, and Times Higher (THE) Top 100 under 50. DCU has twice been named Sunday Times ‘University of the Year’ (2004, 2010). DCU was the first Irish University to be designated as the “University of Sanctuary” in recognition of its commitment to welcome asylum seekers and refugees into the university community and to foster a culture of inclusion for all. Competitively won research funding is approximately €38 million per annum, and DCU invests considerable amounts of its resources to develop research infrastructure and support key programmes. DCU has secured 74 EU-funded Horizon 2020 projects (24 projects as coordinator and 50 projects as partner).
DCU’s Institute for Future Media and Journalism (FuJo) –
The DCU’s Institute for Future Media and Journalism (FuJo) is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims to advance the social and democratic values of journalism in the digital age. FuJo members combine expertise in journalism and digital media as well as related fields across the social sciences, data and computer science, business and ethics. FuJo research provides informed leadership for the news media sector and the academic field through interdisciplinary projects and industry-focused innovations. FuJo research projects support sustainable and socially valuable journalism by investigating changing contexts of media production and consumption as well as advancing new tools and skills for journalism. Key research areas include digital disruption and innovation, media values, audience trust, and digital literacy. FuJo works closely with national and international partners – across academic, industry, NGO, and policy sectors – to develop research projects. FuJo is guided by a distinguished advisory board with leading representatives of the Irish and international media industry. The DCU School of Computing. The School of Computing at Dublin City University has earned a strong reputation for excellence in research and teaching. In addition to its existing programmes the B.Sc. in Computer Applications degree, the B.Sc. in Enterprise Computing and the BSc in Computational Problem Solving and Software Development, the new and innovative BSc in Data Science is the first of its kind in Ireland, and is aimed at students who are interested a career in Big Data, data analytics and related data science roles. We also offer a range of innovative taught programmes aimed at producing graduates with the professional and personal skills most sought after in the Information Economy. The School also enjoys a lively, supportive environment for research in many areas of computing, with its numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. research students producing work of significance at both national and international level. With close industry links and fee support for EU students, the School’s teaching and research programmes reflect the current and anticipated needs of Ireland’s industrial and commercial sectors while at the same time meeting the most rigorous national and international academic standards.
